the car has no guts. at high gear you will hear and see the engine rev, but it takes a minute for the car to actually speed up. my friends 95 gs did the same thing. you have lost all the tq and hp. more then likely it is because of a blown O ring, or you need a serious tune up.

ya, any mechanic shop can do it. its pretty easy, you can do it yourself. all you need to do is replace plugs, wires, and belts(if needed).

Is that what's wrong when my rpms go up but don't speed up? And is that hard to fix?

yes. and its easy for a skilled mechanic, but for a beginner level mechanic, it could be very hard. what you will need to do is pull the tranny to get to it. you need to unbolt the fly from the tq converter before you unbolt the tranny. there is a plate on the bottom of the engine that covers the fly. unbolt it and start to unbolt the fly. to get all of the bolts you will need to turn the crank. it should be a 6bolt. after that is done, unbolt the tranny and pull it out. the tq converter will slide of the tranny with a little bit of wiggling. then put it back in reverse.

If you do decide to do this yourself, don't forget the torque specs for the bolts.  Almost all bolts around moving parts need to be turned to the correct tightness.  Too loose, you fall apart; too tight, you strip the bolt.  most manuals will have a list/diagram telling you what tq to turn the bolts to.

That's probably a good idea.  As a beginner mechanic, tearing out the trans and then replacing it could be a rather daunting task.  Honestly, I always avoid taking apart more than necessary because it just makes things easier to put back together.
