You can use any paint, its just the quality that you want. for something average you can use DuPont NASON paint and clear. The paint lets you get away with many color configurations and it's relatively affordable. The clear on the other hand is mediocre and will only look its best after its painted, buff it and looks brilliant but after 6 months it'll look like it's been in the sun for 10 years. The best trick is use NASON paint and then use a higher alternative from DuPont. Chroma Premiere Clear. We painted a mustang black. we used 99 black (generic) and Chroma Clear. The spray characteristics of the clear as it atomizes is way better than the NASON alternative and it covers up more evenly and uniform and it has a 10 year guarranty on the shine according to the paint store that sold it to us. If you use NASON only you're looking at about 350 dollar for: 1 gallon of clear and its activator, .5 gallon of Paint, 1 gallon of it's reducer (for nason its 1:1 ratio or half/half), 1 gallon of primer and it's activator. For the NASON/Chroma Clear mix you're only looking at about 100 dollars more.

If you go to most small bodyshoppes that have weird music playing, they use this configuration, but charge for the full chroma system which is much, much more expensive. Look at about 700 average if you use the Chroma system.

Sherwin williams is good too, but it doesn't let you get much work time and its a bit tricky.

When you paint a car the preparation, base surface and clear is what matters. Any idiot can get an even coat of paint on after a few tries. But if the surface is wrinky, warped, or distortions it'll show through and if the clear is sprayed incorrectly you might have to spen a whole day sanding the thing smooth or might have to start all over again...
