It doesnt really matter all that much but doesnt a cold air intake increase mpg and performance, not just performance?

If i am correct no, because your MAF sensor (the sensor that measures air intake so it can tell you ecu how much gas to pump for the correct fuel air ratio) will sense the colder, denser air as more air coming in, so it will pump more fuel. but correct me if im wrong but that sounds pretty good to me

although woody's reply makes sence, but when i got my cold air intake, on the box it said guaranteed horse power and better fuel mileage.

A cold air intake insures cooler air. Cooler air is a vital ingredient in higher horsepower, and also higher gas mileage. I have added Headers, Exhaust and (Short-Ram)Air Intake to change my car from (stock)36mpg to 48mpg. The cooler the air, the faster, and the more efficient. If you notice on cold nights or in the cool mornings, your car may seem a bit peppier. Anyways, anything that cools your air or your fuel will help your performance.

how does it create higher gas mileage though? cause yeah your ecu should recognize the high amount of air coming in and adjust the fuel amount as well. You sure it wasnt just your headers and exhaust that helped you that much?
(Being into muscule cars ya never really paid to much attention to gas mileage or fuel saving techniques, just more horsepower)
I just figured it helps the car run more efficently which inturn helps mileage. and it is less restrictive than a paper filter, which is one less strain on the engine

What about using just a standard air box but using a k&n filter?

Stock air box and K&N filter combo should yield a few hp (~1-2) and a slight increase in mpg (again ~1-3). K&N filters allow for an increase in air flow, thus allowing the engine to run more efficiently. More efficient running engines = more power, more mpg, but all up to a certain point though.
