The car runs great.  On the highway or in the city it generally runs fine.  The problem is that on occasion after a long run on the highway and some times just around town, it will idle way down to the point of seeming like it will stall then rev up a bit, then back down.  I was headed into NY this past week with her car and as I was going through the Lincoln tunnel and wasn't sure I would make it.  To be safe every time I had to slow down and inch forward I would put the car in neutral and keep a low but steady rev on the engine.  On that same trip home the symptom never reappeared.  A month later on a trip up to State College, PA it happened again on the way home as I got off the highway and into traffic.  In my day if this symptom occurred I would be under the hood mucking around with the carburetor. Maybe looking at the plug wires, etc.

Would like to get an idea of what I am looking at for possible problems before taking it in the the shop.
