If your looking for something that will last you a while I recommend a Honda Accord or a Civic. If you have some money I would look for a RX7 or a Supra.

The Honda Acord, and Civic are both NA 4cyl FWD cars.  They're not good for working with.  A Subaru Forester is more of a SUV Sedan mix if I'm not mistaken.  The MX-5 would be a fun car to have, and way easier to work with.  If you got a Mitubishi Eclipse it would have to be a GSX because it is the AWD Turbo'd one.  Ford Mustangs are overrated unless it's a Cobra.  And as far as I'm concerned I hate Scions so I won't say anything about them.

small block power... simply amazing!  The miata is fun to drive, cramped as *** to work on, honda=econo car, subaru will cost more, but great cars, but plz.. no FWD, i agree.. the eclipse would have to be a gsx for any real speed, stangs need to die, cept the cobra and 5.0s, scions can rot in ***  The simplest car for you to work on would be something RWD with a small block, preferably a 350, b/c is has more aftermarket support than really any other engine made.  you can go to a local auto store, and grab a book on how to build a 350 pushing 400hp for around $3,200!  and v8s are always more reliable than 4s, 4s have to work twice as hard to move the car than an 8, so they always run very hot, where as 8s have amazing power, keep your foot out of the pedal and you'll do ok on gas, but when u get in it, it will guzzle through that tank, but there aren't many cars that can touch you.

thats some bull you're right 4s and 6s have to work harder but there are several that could beat v8 powered cars like the supera, skyline, 350z and some 240's but thats not naming them all I would go with a small tuner car to have great gas mileage and the same amount of horses.

I think you fail to mention that v8's have a lot more parts to go bad than a 4cylinder, 8 cylinders, equals two times as many parts capable of going bad.
Asides the fact that a turbo 4cylinder will get a good 30% better fuel mileage than a v8, Factory turbo 2.0 4cylinders are street versions of the same 280hp WRC cars, that go off of jumps 40 feet tall, and race in ice, snow, gravel, mud, water, etc. I have one of these motors, and I can tell you that Toyota did not give me an unreliable motor. Let me ask you this, how many V8's do you know of that come with a stock metal headgasket, stock 540cc injectors, a stock A2W IC, stock MAP based ECU, a stock TCS, stock anti-lag manifold, stock LSD, stock internals capable of 450whp, and a stock map based ECU, in 1994? My engine came with all those WRC race car features on it factory, and to tell me I am unreliable when I have put 150,000 miles on an original engine/tranny/turbo, boosting 15psi daily without leaking or burning any oil is unreliable, well your plain wrong.

As a former miata owner, I can definitly tell you that the engine bays are not at all cramped to work on, and they are one of very few NA engines I recommend buying since it is very easy to make one run with a turbo charger, they already come with low 9:1 compression ratio engine stock, and oil squirters for the pistons, DOHC 16v, excellent for drifing and autox.

Asides from running hot cuz I have a turbo, there are things I do to get around having a hotter running car. I am midway through installing a methanol injection kit, this will reduce my intake temps by 60-100 degrees as well as add some octane to my fuel. At 2.15 a gallon, and I only need 1:3 meth to water ratio, its very cheap, fuel efficient power, that will drastically lower my exhaust temps while being much safer than nitrous, allowing me to turn it up several psi on pump gas. Letting the car idle after parking it is another way to let it cool down, they make turbo timers for them you know.

Turbo 4cylinders's are one of the best tuning platforms for a daily driver you can have, they generally get more than 20mpg city, are cheap to own, cheap to maintain, and part availability isnt really a problem, even for my JDM only motor.

Yal is gonna think I'm crazy but I'd buy a 1987-1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe.
They will run bout 150 and boost 15 psi factory, if u get a boost adjuster I've heard of people getting 22 psi out of them. stock with the 5 speed they is bout 340 hp and for under a grand u could proly get it to 400 hp out of a 4 chil and they is cheap can get a decent one for under 2 grand. I got an 88 it's a great car. If u want to look at some here's a great site www.turbotbird.com
