hey guys, well like the title said i am rookie, and different, i been a mechanic since i was 14. i used to rebuild small blocks(305's, 350's mostley) and big blocks any ware from 454 and up. i have done off the frame restorations on trucks cars, etc. and know thing or two about diesels. I know how to rebuild axels, drive trians and trannsmission. But i came from a different world. 4x4(not the rednkneck stuff). the top of the line sponser builds.
i have decided that i want to start getting the sport/hobby of the tuner field. i have some questions. not neccesarly about what cars, i will list what i am looking for and advice about them would be awsome -1989-1998 nissian 240sx/silvia -mid 90's 300zx -1986-87 toyota carolla -1990's toyota supra
now for the questions, sorry for being so long. i want to stay away from the type of cars that poeple usually diss, the ones that sound loud but with no go, i guess you can say the posser cars. how can i build a sweet ride without people saying, aww cute car, or somthing like that. how can i get that racing look instead of the mactch box type car.
thats prety much it, i got questions but need to think about them more to explain myself better, but any advice on me switching to the new hobby and related would be great.
also if any of you guys need mechanical advice or related( i'm used to carburated muscle cars, and 4x4 buggy's)i will try my best. thank you

i would pick the 240sx or the 300zx. but if you pick the 300zx, make sure its the turboed one. the 240sx i a hugely modified car. most people do the sr20det swap into it.

First off, you gotta let us know what type of driving/racing you're into so we can suggest you to a suitable platform car. Unless you're going to build the car from the ground up, stay away from the 90's 300zx and the MKIII Supras. They are awesome when they run but will give you a shitload of headache when they break down. The MKIII Supras are prone to have failure headgasket. I don't have any personal experience about the Corolla though. The Silvia is a great car (and great looking to especially the S15 and S14 Kouki) and like stated above, you can always swap in the SR20DET or step up in the game and swap in the RB26-series and make it a poor man's Skyline, lol.

thnaks guys, the racing i am interested into(from pre- experience rally, sand dunes)would be drifting and street/track racing. i already got cop scanners and top of the line radar detectors as well.
now for carburation i choose holly. just becuase thier simple, and their barrels are align better for on the go gas punching. and you can tune them with a 5 doller car mechanic set from a doller storelol. and becuase they make great sizes for small blocks and small blocks with intake/came/ and excuast combo. my first rule of performance, is fuel, exuast, and air, or those both at the same, but always fuel first. you want to keep the injectors and carburators nice and wet, then common sense air for the right match and out take for proper back pressure and to balance the substance provided.

i like the 300zx. its a bigger car. the 240sx seems nice, but i am used to a v8, with a 4 speed. so the 240sx just seems to small to start with, but maybe its a change i have to get used with

a 240sx with a stock sr20det swap will run with if not smoke most v8 muscle cars.

i dont know about that, lol. maybe speed like on a highway, or a long stretch, but with gear ratio being 4.11's with about 560 hp and 980 lb of torque with high range gearing with four speed and stiff rear suspension, them muscles are pretty torqy

a 2700lb 240sx with a 250bhp sr20det easily run with if not beat most 3800-4000lb muscle cars. the only muscle car i know it cant run with is the 3300lb shelby gt500.

My brother's 71' challenger convertable can outrun a 250hp 240, but it's not a fair comparison, as the price difference is just crazy. lol

haha, i love this little comparison you guys have going on, but the 240sx with the 250 hp sr20det in it, it will run, and/or smoke stock muscle cars. other muscle that are beefed up just fly. and that brings me to my question, john, with your experience in the muslce world, can you PM any advice on what to do for my '72 pontiac LeMans? its got a 350 5.7L V8, id also like o know the specs on it cuz i cant find them anywhere. i want a pm cuz this is a tuner site, lol. but a friend of mine suggested an edelbrock rpm air gap, (idle to 5500 or 6500) and a spread bore carb holly, 650 or 700, i dont need anything big. he said the spread-bore cuz besides giving the power and cfm flow of a 4 bbl it opens and closes its thingys, i forgot, for great daily drivabilty, can you tell me more about these things
