Hey guys, I'm not 16 yet. But im still trying to decide if I should buy a Mercedes-Benz SLK 230. It's a 1999, and a guy wants 9000 for it. I plan to upgrade it and what not if my dad will let me. So do any of you know if this is a good car or do any of you have one?? Thanks.

you are in the wrong forums. you need to go to eurotuner.com. this is importtuner.com, i.e. jdm. most of us only tune jdm cars. i only tune american and jdm.

i wasnt tryin to be mean. it was helpful advice. anything mercedes that says kompresser on it is supercharged. so then ya, it most likely is a good car. i prefer bmw m3, if i ever bought a euro. well, a mini cooper s is bad ass. you can probably pick up 2002 for a grand more then the mercedes. the mini will have a lower cop profile then the mercedes. trust me on this one. there nothing like givin a, no offense, dumbass teen in a mercedes a big fat ticket. the mini s is really zippy and fun to drive.

a couple things.  yea there nice cars, my nieghbor had one and it was great. but...your 16...your insurance will be out the roof in that car. also if you do plan to, though some mods on there, german cars tend to have a much more pricey aftermarket than most jdm cars. so if you have enough money go for it but im just warning you they are expensive.  i have a little experience with mercedes cause two of my friends have them.  one of which had a c230 kompressor and he did some suspension work and swaped out the engine for an sl55 AMG's...needless to say it moved pretty well after that.

i know you were trying to help, but you have to watch out as mercedes tend to be not that reliable, i personally dont care for mercedes, but i love BMW all the way. but the c230 kompressor is good. but as for that swap your friend did, he put an SL55 AMG into a c230 K????? holy hell, thats a **** load of power. but back to the point, it will cost you alot for upgrades, they are pricey.

the phrase that stood out to me here is "if my dad will let me."

i'm assuming that you're not the one paying for the car, and if you are, it's money originally out of daddy's pocket. if he's willing to fork out that kind of dough for your first car, then all the power to you [pun intended. lol].
but then again, you know what they say about assumptions...

if you ARE paying for it out of your own pocket, i'd recommend ensuring you have a steady, mid-high income job first, because, as stated in other replies, if the aftermarket doesn't burn a hole in your pocket, the insurance will be sure to incinerate it.

personally, i'd call the insurance company to get a quote on the premiums, and do some browsing online, not only to see the price of aftermarket parts, but also to see how available even stock parts are. because i'm guessing if something DOES go wrong [heaven forbid], replacement parts are gonna cost a pretty penny. and that's my two cents. =P

yea as nitrospiff007 metioned, mercedes, especially the sl, slk, clk, and cl dont have a great reliability reputation.  my dad actually thouhgt about buying a mercedes E class but because of the reliability ratings he ended up with a 5 sereis bmw. if you want a german car, then maybe look at some of the bavarian counterparts.  maybe a z4 or z3, or 330ci, maybe and m3 if you can find one in a descent price range.

well i know someone who has a 2000 and he loves it, mind you its got like 80,000 kms on it and is summer driven only so its in damn good shape but he's also got deep pockets to pay for it so i would avoid it if your the one paying for everything. i wouldn't recomend a bmw anymore than the mercedes. my brother had a 325 and after blowing the motor he was looking at about 5 grand simply to get it running again(one piston broke and that was bout it) so they are just as expensive

well chev, it is expensive, but they are very strong, reliable motors. and its expensive because of the quality, it will cost you a pretty penny, but you know its quality workmanship

Also mercedes are more comfort oriented and BMW are more performance oriented (i know there are exceptions but for the similar models of each company you will find this to be true)

Its not a great car... All the Mercedes with the AMG package are out the yin-yang in price.. All german cars are expensive and Consumer reports lists them as some of the most unreliable, even worse than most American junk.. i would say get a Japanese car... the most reliable, most proven, with the highest sales, and not one like Mitsubitchy who is near bankruptcy... Honda all the way, baby !!
