im looking at getting a 240 and doing a engine swap but which engine should i put in? s13, 14, or 15? Also its my first car im going to be working on so if anyone can help me with some general info i might need if i plan on doing this.  What is the engines potential for horsepower if i do a engine rebuild anyway

a good tip, have someone there who knows how to work on cars.  there is no such thing as an easy engine swap, even if it is a direct drop in.  me personally, i like the s15 motor, but theyre all basically the same.  i think the big numbers for an sr20 is somewhere in the high triple digits, close to a grand... import tuner is building on for that "castrol syntec top shop challenge", and theyre thinking itll be around the 900 mark.

Find yourself a 240 sx or nissan dedicated forum, such as nicoclub.com or something.  being the sr20 is a direct drop in everyone and theyre brother has done it so youll find LOADS of info on te web.

remember, google is your friend, and the greasy side goes down.

Thanks for the reply i checked out nicoclub an it was good now im just wondering if its a good plan i have or not.  Is is easy or hard in general to work on a 240 and are there better cars i could get?  I plan on putting over 20000$ into it over the next couple years and i plan on racing it so would a 240 be a good car for me? also are there places that do engine swaps for a decent price becuase thers no way i can do it yet.  Im starting a mechanic apprenticeship very soon.

GL with your schooling.

The 240 is an amazing platform for starting out on a budget, which is good for someone still in school.  There are plenty of places that do swaps.  your best bet would be to go check out a local meet or head over to one of the SCCA events in your area once spring time rolls around.  Altho, if your hesitant about the swap, the KA in it is also a decent engine, so the car doesnt need a swap, its just that the SR engines from the JDM silvias pull more power, easier, and more reliable power.

What kind of racing are you planning on doing?  The 240 is a drift monster, even pros use em (albiet the newer JDM versions, but its still a 240 at heart for us in the states).  It would fair well in drags, but the V8's rule that event (for the most part). If cone dodging is your cup o tea, there are alot more nimble cars out there.  as a track car, its RWD layout will fair pretty well, depending on the track layout of course.

As far as doing the actual work on them, I've had no actual hands on time with them, but from what ive heard its on par with ecplise's and whatnot.  might be a headache for someone with no experience at 1st, but once you get the hang of it itll be a breeze.  just make sure 1st time you actually go into the engine (any part OTHER than your typical bolt on) you have someones brain to use on site, just in case.

for racing, check out SCCA.org, for info on all the events/car classes/ etc.  dont wanna beef up the car and find out youd be running against vipers and whatnot.

IMO, focus on getting that ASE badge first, and maintain the car while your doing it. that way, youll have $ saved up, a good career, steady check, and have all your *** squared away before putting serious cash into your ride.
