ok so im just starting to get into the whole hardcore racing thing and ive been wondering about what kind of car i should get.  im going to want a beast and ive been looking at a few cars.

im a huge fan of the honda prelude, but that thing is just too damn heavy.  so basically what ive been looking at getting is possibly a toyota supra and fixing it up so i can blow away all my buddies at the race meets we go to.  i also love the older nissan skylines but i know they cant pass smog to b legal in the us, so would there be any way to make it pass smog without dinking down the car's performance?

im really a noob when it comes to all this tuner talk, but advice and tips would be appreciated.  i just want to get the HELL out of my pontiac grand prix... >< haha

If I were you, I'd look into these cars:
Acura NSX
Honda S2K (both AP1 and AP2)
Toyota Supra (definitely not the 1st and 2nd gen cuz the head gaskets on those are Pain in the rear)
Toyota MR2 Turbo
Lexus SC300 or SC400 (then swap 2JZ on them)
Nissan Skyline R33 (I think this gen can pass the smog insp., but it depends on what state you live in though)

That's pretty much it.

the skyline r33... good luck with that one, specially in kommifornia.

NSX... booku bucks

S2k... Ap2 over ap1, much better handling due to revised suspension geometry

Supra.. the 4th gen is the only one without HG problems, and those are major expensive, a 3rd gen you can pick up for about 3 g's, and with a MHG and ARP studs the problem is all but eliminated (used to own one.

What sort of a budget are you working with? And what type of racing are you wanting to do? Drag/Drift/Auto X/Track/Rally?

Oh, and teg meant the 2nd and 3rd gen supras.  1st gen was actually the 2000gt supra (amazing car), 2nd gen was actually a trim package for the celica with the 5M-GTE engine, 3rd gen was when the supra became its own model, with the 7M-G(T)E for the states, and the 1JZ-G(T,TT)E for JDM.  The 4th gen is the one from F&F, with the 2JZ-G(T,TT)E.  Only the 5M AND 7M engines had the HG problems due to toyota not torqueing down the head bolts tight enough for the gasket material they wound up using instead of the material they used to come up with the torque spec for.

the Acura NSX isn't necessarily expensive. If you're patient and lucky enough, you can find 1 for around 20K (which is within his budget). But I HEARD that even though the NSX has superb handling, it does not perform really great in it's price range. But that's just wat I heard. I've never got a chance to drive it so I don't know.
And I agree with AP2 over AP1. It has better handling and the AP2's 6sp trans is bulletproof. Oh, ever thought about BMW M3's ? You have another option to look into.

im looking at about 20k hard cash and about another 8k for a trade in with my pontiac so 28k.  and i agree good luck with the skyline, but like i said if i get a friend in az n get it reg over there the CHP wont b able to do *** about it.

well mostly me n my friends do drag, bout half the time from dead stop and half the time from a 40 roll.

i dont kno much about tuners but ive heard the supra is pretty much one of the best if u do the right things to it. plus its a bad ass looking car

if u really idolize the Supra then u'd better off with it. I myself love Supra too and it is one of my dream cars. And with the Supra, the sky is the limit. Good luck with finding your favorite car and have fun tuning.

With 28k to spend on a supra, you'd either be able to find a low mile N/A MK4, or a kinda high milage supra turbo, not in primo condition, but nothin more than a couple dings an such on the body.  Due in large part to that damn F&F movie, they are even rarer now than they were originally, and the TT model in good condition is actually around if not more than the original sticker price.  But the 2JZ in em is pretty much bulletproof. Not to mention the chick factor when your rollin down main st with the targa off.

If ya need some more supra specific info,

Happy Hunting.

Well if you do get a car registered over in AZ and you get pulled over here in CA, you better be able to show them a AZ drivers license or you're going to be in a heap of trouble.
