well i went to go look at the corolla near my house and the owner doesnt know what year it was and i was wondering if there is a way u cant tell if its and AE86 , AE85 or other dates it kinda looks like and AE86 but then the 85 also looks like an 86 too soo is there anyway to tell wat year the corolla is?  

From what ive read the dif between the 2 is the 85 had a single cam, 86 had a DOHC.

yea i think the head is the only difference, not sure tho.  One thign to look into if you were lookin for power, apparently they can use the 3s-gte engine from the mr2 turbo's. wikipedia mention something about the jgtc 300 racers using them, and the 3rd gen 3sgte pushes 245 hp stock. and that will be plenty of power to push around the featherlite chassis. Ive been looking at em for my mr2, but due to the problem i found in the front suspension im doing that 1st, and power has to wait  

Actually it has 245 ps which is a little more than how much hp it has.

I think the AE86 has used the DOHC 4age throughout its lifespan, because I own a 87 MR2 and it uses a DOHC 4AGE, and there wasnt a SOHC version of it. The only differences in the years is the tail lights in 87+, but Im not entirely familiar with them either.  

AE85 and AE86 isn't a designation for the year of the car, You can get a 1985 AE86 and a 1986 AE85.

The difference is like a golf and a golf gti, different engine, suspension and brakes.

In north america the AE86 was called the corolla GTS, and was manufactured for a large portion of the 80's.

Look for badging that says GTS, as well as a dual cam motor. You definitely don't want an AE85 unless your willing to do an engine swap.  

ill keep an eye out for the GTS and dual cams. and the DOCH motor.


and the AE86 can get an 4AGZE swap right and this motor has a stock turbo dont it?


if i do get the AE86 im gonna only push like 250-300hp max cause the AE86 is really light.  

I feel I should also mention that the GTS from 1983-1987 is the AE86, anything later is front wheel drive and anything earlier has no after market support.

Also DOHC stands for Dual Over Head Camshafts (Meaning it has duel cams, I was just to lazy to put DOHC in my post)
SOHC means single overhead camshafts.

As for Toyota motors sirscrotum'll have to cover that field. I know nothing of swaps.
