Just wondering if anyone can help me out here. I'm thinking about picking up my first project. Just wondering if there is anyone out there that can give me some pointers on what to expect. It's an 88 Turbo. Just recently had the head redone and also turbo resealed. If there is anything I should know maybe someone could hit me back and let me know.

Make sure the clutch/tranny aren't annihilated. How many miles are on the block, and has it been rebuilt at any point?

He said there is 187,xxx miles on the block and that everything looked good when they had the head reworked. He's exact words on the clutch "The transmission is fine, kinda sticky as you would expect from a sports car but it isn't going to affect your driving." My dad is an ex mechanic. He's worked on Datsun/Nissans and Toyotas for pretty much since they got to the US. He's warning me to stay away from it. He says even if the headgasket has been replaced it's more than likely gonna happen again, also that the stock turbo on them is crap. Just looking for some opinions.

Also the guy is saying it runs a little rough because he has a Lexus MAF sensor on it. Says once you get it out and run it a little it settles down. Recommends that it just needs bigger injectors and to be tuned to run smoother. I'm going to look at it later. Got any advice about what to look for?

i say take it easy on the car until you can upgrade it. those motors do have horrible head gaskets, so i'd advise you upgrade to a much stronger one. i don't know anything about the turbo on the motor, but that is a fairly simple upgrade with the proper supporting mods. its one of those cars that you beat up at the track then spend a couple of weeks fixing it. my neighbor is a mechanic and has a client with an 89 Supra that has been rebuilt 5 times. all 5 rebuilds are due to faulty head gaskets, and very minor driver errors at the track.

Yeah sounds good. The thing is I live in Hawaii. Just worried about it over heating in the traffic on the drive home daily. Maybe its not a good idea for a daily driver. It looks like alot of the stuff has be rigged on it. Doesn't have the original cooling fan. Has an electric one hooked up to a toggle switch. Not sure if that keeps it cooler or what. Also alot of gauges rigged up.

What do you think about a 96 GS-T for a starter car?

for a starter car much better choice. if this is going to be your first project/track car then FWD is a much safer platform on which to begin learning.

Seeing as its your first car, STAY AWAY supras SUCK for reliability, and KZ was right. Ive had mine for 30k, and already had to redo my HG twice. I have to put the thing on a lift or jack stands just about every other weekend to fix something or another that just decided to blow up on me.
But as far as that car goes, the lexuz MAF is a common upgrade when running higher boost (10+ psi) and the injectors he talking about are the 550cc injects from lexuz, also another common upgrade. as far as all the guages go, knowing these cars, one's a temp gauge, and another is oil pressure. The turbo is fairly decent, nothing track worthy, but it does fine on its own. That being said i would advise to never go over 10 psi anyways. If you do wind up bying this, it means you havent listened to a word ive said lol, but the upgrades youd wanna look at are; a metal head gasket (I havent had a problem with my HKS) and ARP head studs or bolts (studs are better but require pulling the engine). After that a 2.5 no cat or 3" hi flow cat exhaust. but trust me on this, as a first project this car will give your night mares and keep you up at night with all the gremlins itll bring with it.
