hello guys, I have a bone stock 97 ls and it is for my daily commuting. However, I would like to add some extra power to it. The catch is that I rarely shift above 4000 rpm. I would like to know what I can do to this car to add more torque from idle to 4k rpm, at the same time still have it reliable. I did some research and made a short list of parts: 1)dc 4-1 header (help around 2k-4k rpm) 2)toda cams (great torque at low to midrange grunt) 3)a pair of toda cam sprokets (adv .5 exh) 4)aem fuel rail 5)aem fuel pressure regulator (the power page mentioned that 40psi is good) and ofcourse I need to fine tune it after getting everything installed. Well so far that is all i can think of that would give me the lower end torque other than getting bigger bores and cylinders. I was about to add cold air intake and some aftermarket exhaust but those seems to affect more at the peak. Like I say, I only want to focus on getting the most power for my engine around 0-4000 rpm. Please give me your professional inputs.

Unfortunately you will never have a "torquey" Integra since integra motors are designed to have all of the power in the top end/VTEC range. The only way to have an Integra or any other Honda engineered motor with a significant increase in torque over stock is to run boost, which costs a pretty penny. However, you can make the car snappier in the bottom of the power band.
Forget the fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator. Since you aren't running forced induction you don't need to worry about your fuel system since there won't be enough air being forced into your combustion chamber to make you run that lean.
Also look into either a Buddy Club or Vibrant header. DC made good products for a minute, but their quality has gone down the drain. I have heard of too many instances of peoples DC headers cracking because they couldn't tolerate the heat.
Toda cams/gears are great, and you should see some decent gains from them, but if you want to use stage 2 or higher cams, then you will need to upgrade your valve springs and retainers as well. If you are more concerned with low end power then go with a short ram intake.
My big question to you however is why don't you ever rev over 4K rpm's? Your car is designed to stay in the upper power band. I drive a civic si and my motor begs for me to stay at 8K rpms all day long.

I made a mistake, I should've mention crane cams instead of toda cams. Thank you K20z3 for your input. I know that my engine is made for high reving power, but I just dont see myself shifting past 4k rpm at every corner. However, I just want more usable power at the bottom end and midrange because, reaslistically, more than 90% of my driving is around 0-4k rpm.

well most ls r vtec but the only way u can get to 4k rpm faster u gotta boost it a good one would be a greddy package as there more reliable

^you should do a VTEC conversion. Skunk2 Racing makes products for the conversion.

I understand that I can make an Ls-vtec, but again the vtec head is useless at the bottom end. It would increase the compression a bit, but other than that the vtec meant for high reving. Any other inputs other than header, toda cam sprokets, and crane cams? Again, I dont really need to race anyone on the street, just want a bit more torque at the bottom and midrange. Thanks.

Thats the thing. All of the parts made for your car, besides the 1 or 2 turbo kits, are designed to increase power in the mid to upper power band because thats where Hondas/Acuras have their power. You could rip apart your block and bore it out from a 1.6L to a 1.8L and rebuild it with forged internals, but that would cost more than i'm sure you would want to pay.

well, it is 1.8l for the stock engine. I was thinking of swapping the bottom out for a b20z for slightly higher compression and Ill be making much more lower end torque since b20z is a 2.0l...though, it is not smog legal and I live in california....(I know, it sucks real bad!!)...so I am trying to figure out a way to add some bottom end yet...have it reliable and not making a whole in my wallet. The funny thing is that I dont want to gain a whole lot of power, I just want to have a consistent power band at the bottom end no less than 90lbft of torque. I dont think that is alot to ask for is it? lol

I live in Los Angeles so I know all about CARB and what not. The B20 is a perfectly legal motor. It came stock in the 1999-2001 Civic Si's and I've seen plenty of people running them online and at a few meets. You might be thinking of a JDM B20 which would not meet smog since Japan has very loose emissions regulations, but a USDM B20 is 100% legal. If you can find one for a good price I say go for it. A lot more kick then your stock motor, and I think it would suit you better.

I thought the B16 came stock in 99-00 Civic SI's. With the cams and adjustable gears you can tune it to get a little more power where you want it.
