Depends on what your looking for. My car for example gets about 23/30mpg and runs about high 11's in the quarter on a stock long block/stock ecu/fuel injectors with a basic bolt ons.

I personally recommend any stock turbo 4cylinder that isnt FWD as a nice compromise between performance and fuel costs since when off boost i get the gas mileage of a 2.0 4cylinder and can keep up with a lot of V8's.

the stis get 18 mpg City / 24 mpg Hwy and the evos get 19 mpg city / 25 mpg hwy. both of them have plenty of aftermarket parts.

I say go with the STi! Try for '05 though instead of the '04. They fixed a couple issues from the '04. But that's my personal preference. According to Top Gear the Sti and Evo are pretty equal.

^ according to top gear they are 100% identical in performance, but they always found themselves driving the STI back to their hotel at the end of the day, and they have no idea why.  I know lots of subaru buffs and they say STI's are just much more driver friendly then Evo's.

Just get an 07.  You won't regret it.

it seems like everyone here says STI, but thats if you got the cash, and "the know how"
What i have seen thats perty fun to play with and not to hard on the wallet are the mitsubishi eclips(pick one)
and the nissan 240SX, or you can go with what everyone one else seems to have, a honda..lol

hey my friend has a real nice 1998 honda civic DX, which we have worked on (mainly me, because I'm the mechanic and he has the $), if you can find a used one cheap then go with it, as long as its in great condition.  they can go for about 5k, which leaves you with quite a bit of extra money for parts.
