I realize you guys have to be getting pissed off about all of teh new car threads out there. Hate to say it, but this is one more. However, my case is a little different. I actually tried to look around and figure stuff out for myself, however, upon finding the new car sticky, there was so much tech talk in it that I simply don't understand, that it simply wasn't working out. So, as a last ditch effort, I come to make a new thread.

The deal is, I live in Alabama, just about the most redneck it's going to get. Most people around here own big Chevrolet trucks with nasty V8s that their parents bought them. I get pissed off at them acting like they go fast in those trucks. I know better. Unfortunately, there isn't much of a tuner scene around here to show them up. Im going to do my part and try to get into this. Not only do I like seeing all these tuners in action, learning this hobby will help later on, if and when I need a car to be fixed, I can do it myself.
All that said, here's my main question:
WHat sort of RWD car can I get for a relatively (say under $10,000) low price? I'd like to get a forced induction engine, but that would probably kick me out of my price range. I need something relatively cheap as far as gas is concerned, and fariyl easy to add upgrades to. I'm not looking for a 10 second car, just something fun to drive around town, fun to mod, and to show these rednecks that their trucks are nothing.

if you're set on RWD the only car I can think of at the moment that you will find for under $10,000 w/ forced induction would be an MR2 Turbo.  Fantastic car and cheap to upgrade.  If you're down for AWD then look for a 2002 WRX with a salvaged title.  I've seen those online, and heard of them at police auctions for well under 10g's.

Also an eagle talon tsi would be another option for a cheap car that is AWD. Around where i am you can find a decent talon for under 10,000. Also the eclipse GSX would be another good choice for an AWD car, i'm not sure of the price on those where you are tho. Both are factory turbo charged as well (correct me if i'm wrong?)

Anything else, guys? It doesn't absolutely have to be forced induction. This is strictly a daily driver, but with enough go-go to be able to whoop up on some rednecks. There wil be no real track time with this thing. Where is a good place to find these used cars? Yahoo autos is the only place I've looked, with less than desirable results.

Also, why specifically the 02 WRX? Other years leave more to be desired?
