im looking to buy a 2g eclipse or a 3g eclipse. I really want to get a 2g because its a better tuning platform, and its already turbo(gst and gsx). But im not sure on how reliable they would be now. Can anyone tell me how reliable the 2g eclipse is and how much longer one could last with low miles and good care. thanks in advance

Well as long as maintenance has been done regularly and the car hasnt been abused then the car will last a while. Of course if you buy one with higher mileage and nothing has been replaced. Expect things to start breaking.. Just normal wear and tear there. Also just a note.. always good to do some of the maint ahead of time before it breaks and really messed you up ie.- Timing belt.
Dont go with the 3g. Its a toned down 3000gt engine which is a good engine buuut the NA FWD version isnt much of anything for tuning or making quick.
So pretty much. Take car of the car, do your regular maint and the car will last you quite a while (200k miles +)

there is no way the car will last even 150k miles i personally have 4 friends that owned them and they all blew them up at around about 130k either turbos failing or the aluminum heads crack because of the boost and heat or is spins bearings all of witch happened to my friends

Oh wow. My friends has about 180k and still running strong. And new oil pump at 120k will help out with the spun bearing quite alot You know that being a TT 3k owner:P

It all depends on what kind of quartermile times hes pursuing.
If he wants to have an unreliably slow car, or a unreliably fast car. If he wants a slow car, he shud pick a NA 2g or 3g eclipse (That includes ALL of the 3g eclipses), where the 4g63t in the Eclipse GST's and GSX's are notorious for crankwalking, valves bending whenever their timing belt breaks (Actually that goes for all eclipses) However the Eclipse GSX, is one of the best quartermile bang for the buck cars out their, both the 1g and the 2g.
I dont even consider a 3g eclipse a tuner, its morel ike a Chrysler Concord with somewhat sportier styling and has the same name badge as a predecessor tuning car, but possesses 0 tuning potential.

im not looking for the fastest car right now, i just want something that will last about 5 or 6 years, and can run decent times on the 1/4 mile. if i pick the 3g im going to get the RIPP SDS for it.

i highly doubt your friend has 180k on an original engine turbo mitsubishi and without rebuilding the motor or replacing the head.

From the importtuner community, and the 1/4 mile, you will get a lot more respect for owning a 2g eclipse gsx, than you ever would owning a 3g.
What is your definition of a decent quartermile time? My definition is 12's, the 3g eclipse runs like 15.7, not even close to a respectable (or "decent") time, so this would automatically eliminate the 3g eclipse from a car you should be considering.
