the future for hybrids does look pretty bright. the Toyota FT-HS for example looks promising but, thats not what an AE86 is about. it should be a moderately powered, responsive, NA 4cylinder if it really wants to stay true to its roots.

i hear ya on that but what nowadays is going to be "true to the roots"? all consumers are looking for nowadays are economy, and luxury, not non abs, with posibly no power steering, and factory lsd'd jdm street monsters that basically your in full control of every aspect. if the toyota racing company came out with a AE86 it would def have to be limited edition for one, and second it would be filled with meaningless trinkets to gain the intrest of everyone besides the hardcare 1980s drift fans and teenagers, if its even affordable, even if they are thinkin about makin it which is still sort of meaningless, because driving laws are gettin so strict and im sure it will be equip with TCS, and other bad driving assists and who wants to track their new 25k dollar car unless your ballin,

very true, it would have to be limited, probably a toyota motorsports (tms) or TRD deal. its definitely a niche market for this car.

My thoughts on Toyota bringing back the AE86 are that it would have to be kinda like our Civic in America. Not in a performance sense (at all), but in that it would need to be cheap, blan, accessible, and like DukeDriver said, not have any of our new technology like TCS, ABS, or even Powersteering.

thats prolly the extacy ill reach when the ol 240's done. and i agree, the world has a entirely different view on the autoworld than the tuners and drivers have.

some specs possibly for the new Subieyota ae86: under 4m long, approximately 1,7 m wide, measuring 1,35m from the ground up, target weight lies under 1000kg, will most likely be powered by a 1,5 liter 2NZ-FE engine. Toyota's new partner, Fuji Heavy Industries (or Subaru to most people) will be supplying the RWD drivetrain.
and here are some possible pics:

considering i used to drive an ae86, im not digging it. like the others said, its gunna have WAY too many "help" features that make you in less control of the car. and that concept that carbonfaddict posted looks like a cheap photoshop combination of the TC's and the new 06+ civic SI's.
very disappointed if toyota decides to bring it out!
