I have a '98 Civic DX and was pondering (big word) a cold air intake. My stock intake is weird, like i've never seen before...its just a plastic tube that leads to an air filter that goes to the engine. Would this be easy to take out and have the intake put in easily? Help is much appreciated!

It should not be hard, just take the cover off the air filter and unscrew the plastic box. The cold air intake should only take about an hour or so to install but thats also including take out the stock intake.

But why would you want a cold air intake for a civic, I have a civic as well, and for $200 you can have a cold air intake or for $40 you can have just he filter that give the same proformance. Your engine is not pulling enough air for an aftermarket intake to cool the air by much.

I'll use K&N because I have one and have done some research on them. A K&N filter says it will give you up to 10-15% more power so at lest 5% which is about +6hp. A cold air intake, by K&N says it will give about +6hp. So why spend more money for the same result.

Ok, so i got my intake right? It's great...my next step is to get it installed. I thought, great...this shouldn't be that hard...i was wrong. I've called like 4 body/auto shops around here and none of them will do it. They claim its too complicated and they don't want to get involved with it. If this is the case, then i'm not taking my car to these places anymore. Isn't a cold air intake supposedly one of the easiet modifications you can do to a car? Wow, anyway...i'm taking to it a "speed" shop in the area and they specialize in this sort of thing and even they sounded iffy. Is it really that hard? Also, does anyone know if the brand Ractive is a really great brand? I know it's well known and pretty good, i just want to see if anyone around here has one.

Personally I would never buy a car part off of eBay.  You'll be lucky if it works for very long.
Also I would suggest you putting the intake on, on your own.  But since you've never seen a black plastic tube going to a filter box as intake ... i.e - A stock Intake system...  You shouldn't touch the inside of your engine.  Anyways it doesn't matter if your intake system is ever installed because your not even going to notice a +6 hp gain.  Unless you already have installed a turbo or something, but by the sounds of it, your car is completely stock.

As a side note, I wouldn't normally do this, but it sounds like your the kinda guy who is gonna crash his car taking a turn too fast anyways...

Wow, first off, i never said that i've never seen one, i said i've never seen one like it. Second, i'm not really looking for a giant hp gain, anyway. Third, I'm glad that a person i've never met just completely judged my driving ability. Not all kids that have these type cars drive like that, i know too many that have died that were my friends and i don't wish to join them. Thanks for the much needed help, in a sarcastic manor of course.

I guess you're right, it is wise that you should first know your driving abilities before making hardcore mods. I get to use neuspeed cold air intake and the performance was great.  Just right for me.
