I am new driver an also  new to the tuner scene, I am having probs picking my first ride  so far I have seen a mitsubishi 1998 eclipse gs,I would like to know if its a good starter car  an also what are some good cars to start with for newbies such as myself. I have a budget of 6,000$  an I have heard hondas are alright  but I am no honda person I think they  suck personaly .

my friends got a 98 eclipse.. from what ive heard from him they have a nack for breaking.. so.. i would maybe try to find something different. also they only have what? like 147hp-ish.. and even less torque. so they are very slow.. its horrible.. especially when ya smack talk that your car will stomp stuff in obviously cant.

Well, since your a new driver, stick to something that is underpowered. Learn to drive off of it, and then move up to faster cars. Fast cars tend to require knowledgeable owners, with somewhat deep pockets and diligent maintenance, 3 things first time drivers are not known for having.

We use to own an eclipse gs. These things are slow turds, that have not too much potential. There NA, FWD setup is crappy for any form of racing, there pretty heavy weighing around 2900lbs, not very high build quality.

What you need is a NA car that has potential of running 11's with less than 10000 into the car, so you can start off slow and learn the characteristics of the car, but still tune and have a pretty fast car in a couple years.

Just as a suggestion, the mr2 mk1 is a great car for this. You can pick up nice examples for cheap, I seen a clean 89 SC MK1 MR2 for sale, and it comes with 145hp in a 2400lb car. Take the supercharger off and put on a turbo, not too hard, and turn up the boost and open up the exhaust, I wouldnt be surprised if you saw 220-240 crank hp for probably less than $1000 in parts.

Or if you swap in a 3sgte into it, turning it into a mk1.5, potential is there to have a very light car, capable of producing 400whp on the stock 3sgte block and 275whp on stock fuel system.

240sx's are also probably capable of 11's before having 10,000 into the car, also look into the miata, you couldnt get it into the 11's or 12's, but 13's very easily with the addition of a turbocharger and the stock motor has oil squirters so its already built for performance from the factory, but it will always take a lot of work, diligent maintenance a knowledgeable owner, and a lot of practice at the track, before you'll get an 11, let a lone a 12. If you can run a flat 13 though, your automatically faster than probably 99.5% of the cars you see on your daily commute so just becuz i talk 11's and 12's which are my goal in a couple months (Probably wont see an 11 for years), 13's and 14's are still pretty quick.

Also, set some money aside for driving lessons at a track. This will make you a much better driver than any of your tuner friends and a safer driver too. If you want to go faster, its always good to work on the nut behind the wheel.

the 98 gs only has 127bhp. the 3rd gens have 147bhp. the 2nd gen rs and gs run the 420a. its a horrible motor that leaks oil. i do like the body style. i know many people who drop a 4g63t into the gs. it bolts right in. im a dsm guy, but i prefer the 4g blocks, i.e 4g63 & 4g64.

Yea Id say both your cars are fast in comparison to a minivan or perhaps even a 1.6l miata, but compared to real cars like vettes and camaro ss's and stuff, there both pretty slow.

Actually they come with 130, but youd be a dumbass to be tuning with an NA in the first place when there is the 3sgte available, just like I would say your a dumbass to be tuning with an NA 4g63 or 4g64 when there are turbo versions available.

well thats pretty convenient isnt it that you can just write off an entire information source as innacurate just because people can put their own information into the articles, I often agree with wikipedia more than Ive ever disagreed with what it has to offer.

Look they come with 130hp, if you dont beleive me, ask my friends on mr2.com how much hp it comes with. And who cares what the NA MR2 can do, I dont race NA's. My NA MR2 was made into a turbo just by simply bolting in a stock 3rd gen 3sgte into it and those run low 13's stock. Id rather tune with a low 13 second MR2, than one that runs 16's.

well if it has that much bhp, it must loose alot from the crank to the wheels. i was rollin my friends 4dr dx, intake and exhaust, and i raced a na mr2, intake and exhaust, and i beat it by half a car length. i raced the same car in my eclipse months ago and spanked it by over 2 car lengths.

i know that your 3sgte mr2 could spank my car all day long on the strip, but thats because youre out of my league. your in the turbo league and im in the na tuned league. i dont race turbod cars unless im runnin a turbo. im not an idiot.
