Yes. In many parts of CA, you'll get busted for a CAI, even though it doesn't actually effect emissions. Some of the CHP dudes are hardarses.
You can swap the engines on a track-only car, however. That's perfectly legal. Just not on a street-driven car.
thats what i hate about living here in CA every issue here is about emissions specialy here in LA well i guess i have to stick with the KA24DE n turbo it but ill be a great choice too because almost everyone that owns a 240sx has a SR20DET well thanx for the help.

They have a pretty good eye for it nowadays, whatwithall the drift this and drift that going around.
Also, turboing the KA is illegal in CA, unless you find a complete kit that's CARB approved.

In CA, yes. I think any modifications on a street driven car is illegal. Correct me if I'm wrong

I say y'all crawl up the 5-0s tailsides on this one, 'cause last time I checked an options sheet, you can't get a Crown Vic w/ a 351, or strobes on top. Those are "illegal" mods to a streetdriven vehicle according to their own definition.

So now I understand why loads of people are moving from CA to *** emissions testing.
Starting Dec 31st CO is doing away with Emissions test to some extent... or so I heard when I was getting my girlfriends car registered. The guy who sold her the RX-7 just had to redue the exhaust system and put on new catalatic converters so make is emissions friendly... but as of Dec 31st only Diesel powered vehicals will have emissions tests...
I love this State!

LS-1 (GM Corvette V-8 N/A engine...most potential of all, expensive, not easy swap, requires MUCH fabrication, even when using a swap kit)
The RB line of engines is pretty expensive, but quite different.
The LS-1 is the big daddy. If you want an engine that makes over 300hp in N/A form, responds VERY well to nitrous and to F/I, can eat up many cars on the dragstrip and will definitely run with the big boys, this swap is for you. However, be warned that it's no task for the impatient. It requires careful consideration and layout procedures, is very time consuming and demands an open mind for fabrication and such. However, the end result is a pavement chewing, tire skinning, ground pounder that will yank a kink in your neck quite instantly.
I don't mean to be reopening up a closeing thread with this but...
these motors... will they only work with a s14 (1992) or would they work on a s13 (1989) too?
When you say expensive what do you conisder expensive? So for a RB Engin is that just the engin or would that include mods like the turbo?
Also do you know of many people or just how common is a LS-1 swap?
I'm having trouble finding info on doing the swap. So I have yet another general swap question... when you swap and motor do you also need to swap the tranny? what about the LS-1 swap being that is an American motor can you use the stock tranny or do you need a corisponding tranny?
Thanks for the help. Just for the record I have a chance to puick up a S13 240sx for about $500 but it has no motor... well it has part of the stock motor. Thanks again.

With your engine comes the tranny and a custom drive shaft but with the followings they can't be hard to find As for the ls I wouldn't recomend it but hey its your show
As for the guy stuck in cally your best bet for mods is to call and make sure your buying things that are legal in your state there are even some hoods that are illegal there but there are companies that have things specifically for california I see it when I'm part shopping all the time

teah, you'll definatly need a new tranny/mounts/driveshaft and to modify the tunnel also a live axle if you're making big power. I think that, unless you're trying to make big horsepower, you should probably stick to the ka or sr

The only people that need to worry about swapping engines as being illegal, is those of you that live in States with draconian emissions laws, I.E. California where you can get heavy fines for just removing the catyltic converter, or tampering with the boost on a turbocharged car.
They send people who modify there imports off to a referee, who will check all your vin plates, and if the vin# on your JDM swap does not match the Vin# on the car, then the car is illegal to drive until you either swap the engine or put the VIN# from the stock engine, onto your JDM swap.
