It depends. If you are racing at 1 in the moring at a old airstrip or a old country road I would say friend. All you have to worry about are the people who are watching or racing like said in a early post. The only people in my opinion who race at rush hour or even in the city are just stupid, and deserve what they get. I would race on a track or drag strip if they were open year round minus repair.

I just don't see anything wrong with racing on old country roads at 1 am. I race every weekend minus fog, rain so if you think I'm a fool or idiot, that is your right. I have been racing for about 3 years, knock on wood...

Thats completely valid in my book, i mean as long as your not doing it on roads that put other people in danger it seems perfectly fine to me

I belive if you are racing in neighborhoods there's somthing wrong with you, see here in South West Florida we have empty road for days..... If the "Street Racing" is organized i think its ok.

I agree with you on that idea. If the racing was organized I think their would be alot less bad press on the import world. I watch Street Fury. It was the SEMA show in Vegas, the city closed up a street so they could race. I think if big citys would do that, for one could make good money and second it would let the kids let out the need for real street racing.

The cities wouldn't bite on that due to the aspect of responsibility in a legal sense. On the other hand, there's a particular allure to illegal street racing which is, naturally, why people do it. Closing down a street for racing is more or less like going to the track. It's no longer as risky as it would be unmonitored.

Over here there is a shortage of drag strips. I live in the City of Johannesburg, which is the largest of the four main cities. Now JHB has four drag strips while Cape Town has two. Durban where I am originally from does not have any. The same goes for Pretoria. So we have an arrangement with the local municipal authorities in Durban. On a Sunday or Saturday we will block off a road that is not busy and that is deemed safe by all parties. The police included. Basically we organize a legal drag race on the road. This works very well, however in Durban, JHB, Pretoria and Cape Town all have major street racing circles. Durban you can understand to certain extent because there is a lack of infrastructure. The cops turn a blind eye most of the time because we use back roads in industrial areas usually from 1200am until 2/3 am. Most of the racers that go there like myself are there to race not show boat. Now that I live in JHB though I tend to stick to the legal races though.

c what most ppl have to understand is how u do it i mean u can always go ahead and u kno drive around and see a car u wanna mess around with a lil and do a lil bit of driving in and out of traffic with a alomst apprropiate speed i mean if the streets r really busy then you should be on the watch out an dnot go like 100 in and out main point is how u drive and in what situation u r

back to the original question, i think its a friend. if some guy is out screwin around in his car and sees some other car and they get in a race and he loses he is goin to want to go modify his car even more so that next time he sees that same guy he can get a jump on him and blow his doors off. so yea i think its a help, but i also see the downsides.

look at the date.
but since were on the subject. im both. you get the idiots who race in rush hour traffic and end up killin people. i wait till its after midnite, go out to a road that i know noone is goin to be on adn race there. drag strips are gettin to expensive. i remember when all nite at a drag would cost a car $15. now they cost $15 a run.

^I remember when gas was $1.40 but people seem to be happy that it's "down" to $2.50 right now here in California. Speedways are just adjusting for global inflation. $15 isn't really that bad for what you get. Most places will still let you run all day for a pretty fair price.
On topic (even if it is ancient), I've never street raced, but I've attended a few as I'm sure almost everyone has. It's a completely different environment from drags, autocross, or concourse events. I can't say I agree with it, but I consider it a necessary evil. It's the lowest form of racing, but it serves to nurture people with a passion for racing who don't fully understand the reprecussions of street racing. The wise will move onto legitimate racing circuits, and the others will die out or lose interest once they mature.
Regardless, people will always do it. The government could mandate 65mph governors in all cars and people would find ways to hack through them or people would simply start sticking to older cars without them. Police could double their forces and people would still find abandoned roads or unmonitored industrial areas to race in.

gas here in oklahoma is $1.57. i used be able to get atleast 4 runs for $15 in a night. now i can only afford 1 run. the only place to race that doesnt burn a whole in my pocket is the streets. its gkind of hard for me to race right now cause i have a broken engine mount and a rusty freeze plug. it goes into the shop for repairs next month. i would do them myself but i dont have a hydraulic lift or the tools to drop my tranny.
