if you keep the stock motor (KA24de) it will be kinda slow.  they only make about 80-100 wheel horsepower stock.  modding it while keeping it naturally aspirated will not give you any real power.  you will either need to turbo the stock KA motor or, ideally, swap it out for a jdm SR20DET (factory turbocharged, capable of 400+hp easily).  since the SR20 comes from the same car it will swap right in.  but since the motor was only availble in this car in Japan, it's technically not too legal, but there are TONS of people o ut there running this swap.  good luck, the 240 is a great platform for beginners and pros at the same time.

How easy would the swap be? I dont really know much about car engines or how theyre put together, would it be something that im going to need a lot of help on because i dont have many friends that are that good with cars or have the money to have someone do it for me. Would i need anyother parts changed or will all the other stock parts hook right up to the motor until i can afford more mods?

Well, they're not that fast. But with some addons and tweaking, you can get it into a monster.

Wow, that is terrible advice, and full of misinformation.
First, most stock sport compacts are Slow, as are all cars of that same era. And you Quoting 100whp as if it were a fact, when SCC did a Baseline run of a 240SX that put down more power than a B16 Powered SI, which put it around 125whp.

With Bolt on and Cams, he's looking at a Healthy 160+whp, enough to make the car quicker, and it would still be fairly street legal. Advising him to swap to an SR20, and calling it "ideal" is stupid. If he really does want more power, the KA motor can be boosted to respectable power levels on a stock block (and Quality Parts). Furthermore, parts on a KA are more readily available (including the motor itself)

It’s sad that a Moderator would be so misinformed. But of course, this magizine only does dynos of 5 different version of the same car (Honda), so it is  expected that you would be mistaken.

Looks like 100whp

And again.

And Let us not forget that the KA Responds better to breathing mods than a D or B series engine

Almost 15whp with the addition of a 3inch Exhaust. And NO low end loss.

nobody cares about how specific the stock specs are on a 240sx, nobody cares if it makes more power than a b16 ,honda engines suck anyways, hes trying to help the guy out, and hes telling him to swap the engine because the ka24de is a pain in the *** to work with and it probably has a crap load of mileage on it anyway, so swapping out the engine would be a laboring but good idea, plus it would make good experience for the kid.

Another idiot.
1. He should care about the specifics on a 240sx if he plans on owning one.
2. Its is good to know what other cars offer
3. By using a General phrase "Honda engines suck anyways" you have proved that you are a complete moron.
4. The KA24DE is A VERY simple engine, has no VTC, no cam phasing, no superchargers, no turbochargers, no advanced ecu to tune, nothing of that sort. So what exactly makes the KA a "pain" to work on?
5. Swapping out the engine is not something an amateur should perform, or something that he should spend money on "just because." If there were a legitimate problem with the motor, by all means, I would agree.

ok, if the ka24de is such a simple engine to work on how come NOBODY in the racing industry uses it, how come every 240sx you see at a major tuning event runs a sr20det, sure there may be some people using the ka24de but most likely they have plans to swap it out anyway, the 240sx is a good 10-20 years old so any of the specifics you find on at least the engine of the car is most likely out of date and inaccurate due to 10-20 years of driving abuse, hot and cold weather, being left in the driveway undriven for however long because the owner got another car, and when i said "plus it would make good experience for the kid" i did not mean for him to do it himself, i meant for him to watch someone else do it so he can learn.

Not to mention that that engine SHOULD NOT be turbocharged in its stock form. Therefore he is not going to make decent hp with it. My guess is it tops out around 250-300 on stock internals. I dont know for sure but what i do know is that it comes with 9.3 to 9.8 compression pistons. Thats just a little too high for boost. And if he has no experience with cars he is probably NOT going to install everything he gets himself. So instead of paying a good 4 or 5k to have the engine to rebuilt and a turbo system installed, an engine swap is a much more ideal way to go. THAT ENGINE IS NOT A GREAT PLATFORM FOR SPEED. Is it a good engine? Yes. Is it the best engine for that car? No. So before you start criticizing people about their knowledge why dont you look more into detail about the whole picture. THE BEST ENGINE FOR THAT CAR IS NOT THE ONE THAT COMES IN IT.
