I know that SUV are not really tuner vehicles but I turst you guys opinions. Any ways to the question; My mom wants a vehicle that sits high off the ground, i.e. SUV. But my dad doesn't like SUV due to there bad gas mileage. Does any one know of a SUV that gets good gas mileage and is not a super expensive hybrid. Or another vehicle that sits high off the ground. My mom is short so having a vehicle that sits high she feels that she can see what is around her and is not as scaried of simis.
Thanks

i am going to stand on my soap box for a moment, so i apologize in advance..
i always try and sway people away from SUVs - people buy them to feel "secure" but you are more likely going to cause more damage to others. if you get into an accident with a Semi, you are in trouble either way. Semis are huge and heavy and will do major damage, period.
SUVs are incredibly wasteful, gass guzzlers, and overkill for what they are most commonly used for. no suvs get good gas mileage. most of the time they are useless since most people dont even use all the space inside or use them for what they are meant for, they are just used to cart the kids around to soccer practice.
of course there are other options - toyota rav4, highlander, honda crv, (insert sedan based compact "suv" here), even a subaru forester (you can get it with the 2.5liter turbo motor ... with over 20mpg) subarus are also very safe in collisions, all wheel drive for bad weather, and a 2.5 liter turbo motor for you to have fun with when your mom lets you borrow the car!
sorry for the rant, im just not a fan of SUVs. when its time to cart my family around, i will pick up one of two cars, a wrx wagon or forester 2.5 xt - you gotta still be able to have some fun! too bad they dont sell the EVO wagon in the US...

Yeah I'm not a fan of SUVs but my mom likes to sit up high. Me and my sister are at college and my mom wants some thing that everyone can fit in; which is the problem with the subaru. My dad is tall so he has to put the seat all the way back making it so that no one can sit behind him. As for wagons my mom test drive the passat wagon and she like it, but it was only about 2 inches higher off the ground the the car she has a Toyota Avalon.
My mom was taking about the rav4, she likes the size and the gas mileage(30 I believe) but I do not think she has test driven it or had my dad sit in it.
Its hard trying to find a vehicle that sits up high, get good gas maileage and has leg room in the front and back and room for luggage.
Thanks for your help; I'll going home this weekend maybe I can get my parents to test drive the rav4 and see if it is a possibility.

although the typhoons / syclones are sick cars and very rare, i dont think this is the car his mom is looking for. she also said she wants to feel safe in the car. if it were him looking for a fast suv, that would be a good pick (but like you said, if you can find one)

Thanks for all of your info. The typhoon looks like a nice car, a suv that I might like, but not for my mom; she not a speed freak, in fact just the opposite. I hate to say it but she is one of those people that brake when the car 200+ ft in front brakes.

not all SUVs have bad gas mileage, the 2.3L Ford Escape 4x4 5sp manual gets 27mpg. a Honda CR-V 2.4L 2WD gets 30mpg, the 4x4 gets 28mpg. those these are fairly small, not that high off the ground, but the 4x4 will get you were you want to go (within reason)

How tall is your dad btw? i'm just over 6'3 and in our chevy trailblazer i have a lot of head room and leg room. The gas mileage could be better, its around 20mpg i think. Its a nice suv and not gonna make a huge hole in your pocket.
